Great news!!   Umpire training for 2024, hosted by the Wisconsin Umpires Association (WUA), is starting up again.  That means spring is right around the corner!  Baseball and Softball seasons will be upon us before we know it.

Training starts January 3rd and ends on March 20th.  Classes are Wednesdays from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.  They are held on the second level of  Whitnall Middle School (5025 S.116th St, Greenfield, WI 53228).  Each night is broken into three hour-long sessions of fun and learning.

What makes training by the WUA different from other programs?  It is the design and the staff that make this a unique and valuable program.  Students will leave with in-depth rule knowledge, proper mechanics training, and the tools and confidence to handle on field situations.

The approach of the WUA training program is a blend of in-person classroom sessions (video and discussion) and gym sessions where field and plate mechanics are taught and perfected.  Students learn from the National Federation of High School (NFHS) rule book.  They then learn about the range of applications of these rules.  Trainees also learn NFHS 2-man umpire mechanics through demonstration and practice.  Future umpires also learn useful game management skills through advice and real-world examples; then apply what they discuss.  We use the NFHS rule set because most area leagues and tournaments use this as their core rule set (with some adaptations).  Our history shows that the hands-on drills and the in depth classroom sessions  provided valuable knowledge for the students and supports their growth as they begin their umpiring careers.

Most of all, students get their training  from fifteen staff members that have combined for hundreds of years of success on the field.  We have trainers that work in  MLB, NCAA, WIAA (high school), Little League, and a mixture of other competitive leagues. Some of our recent students have gone on to a major league training school and been offered a job in the Minor Leagues. We also have a staff member who currently is on the  MLB staff.

In short, you will receive a premier training experience that is second to none in Wisconsin.  Upon graduation, WUA umpires will be able to handle on-field situations and  manage games  with poise and professionalism.

We offer three different levels of training:

  • Level 1 – Baseball ($175): for those that want to begin umpiring, but have no experience and those who have umpired but have had no formal training.
  • Level 1 – Softball ($175): for those that want to umpire fast-pitch softball (can be experienced or not).
  • Level 2 – Baseball ($95): for experienced umpires that want to learn advanced mechanics and hone their trade.
